“Mental health is certainly on the rise since COVID. We’ve seen increased numbers in depression, anxiety, even psychosis,” said Dr. Cindy Gipson, Associate Director of Crisis Services at AltaPointe. “The overall goal is that are not the first responders to a mental health call because it really does take a lot of time,” added Gipson. “Clinicians here at the crisis center- 24/7 can respond- the officers have the iPads in their patrol vehicle and all they have to do is hold it up for the individual who is in crisis and we talk through what’s going on.
“I know one of the biggest concerns that we have is officers responding to the scene where the person is going through a mental health crisis and us responding in a lethal manner,” said McCarty.
