A UK mum conquered her fear of flying by embarking on 13 extreme day trips across Europe in 2024, visiting countries like Poland, France, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland, all within a single day.
Claire Howard, a 47-year-old English teacher from the UK, conquered her long-standing fear of flying by embarking on 13 extreme day trips across Europe in 2024. Despite never taking a day off work, she managed to visit countries such as Poland, France, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland, all within a single day. Inspired by a Facebook group dedicated to extreme day tripping, Claire decided to take the plunge.
Her journey started with a trip to Malaga, and she continued to explore various European destinations, returning home the same day. Her fear of flying originated from a turbulent flight from Perth to Singapore at the age of 21, which led to a persistent aversion to air travel. She even relied on diazepam prescribed by her doctor to manage her anxiety before eventually overcoming it through a preventative hysterectomy two years ago.Claire's extreme day trips cost her approximately £2,600 for the entire year. Each journey, including activities and meals, ranged from £180 to £200. Her return flights varied from £27 to £65. Claire explained that the concept of extreme day tripping resonated with her as it allowed her to experience new places without the stress of overnight stays or long commutes. She found comfort in the predictability of returning home the same day, gradually normalizing her fear of flying. Not only did Claire achieve personal growth by conquering her fear, but she also created lasting memories with her two children, Henry (17) and Caelia (16)
