I worry that rising fees due to VAT could mean faculties like ours become more popular and have to increase class sizes
The government’s plan to impose VAT on private school fees is set to begin as soon as January 2025. As parents consider whether they will need to take their children out of the private system, those with children at state schools are concerned about the knock-on effect this could have on them. Here, Leanne Johnson, 38, explains why she’s worried about the impact on her children’s state school in Chelmsford, Essex.
We’ve been really happy there. My son has autism and ADHD, and the school is really amazing with SEND, kids, those with special educational needs and disabilities. My fear is that schools like ours might be forced to increase class sizes – a massive influx would disrupt the status quo and the lovely atmosphere that they’ve created at that school.
I’ve spoken to a couple of parents at my son’s school, and they are concerned about this, too. It’s a tough balance, because you need enough students to keep the school going, but we don’t want it to be oversubscribed. There’s a new housing development going up around school as well, which is causing panic. There are loads ofSo far, the information about this VAT charge on private schools has been very hazy.
