Retailers across Australia are dealing with increased rates of theft, including from organised crime groups.
Myer has engaged undercover police in Melbourne to help stem growing theft at its department stores, including from groups associated with organised crime, as retailers report rising rates of shoplifting amid increasing economic pressures.that loss prevention rose to 1.7 per cent of wholesale sales – a five-year high – and it would have to beef up its spending on this area.
Theft is occurring across the Myer store network, but CBD and large suburban stores face increased rates. It comes as the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research recently revealed that theft from stores had jumped 23.7 per cent in 2022, the fastest pace of growth in retail crime since records began in 1995.
“David Jones has strong internal processes regarding risk mitigation for the safety of our team members and customers, and for the protection of stock.
