Strong thunderstorms will be popping up Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night, forecasters say.
The storms could bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning and wind gusts that could knock down trees and power lines.
The watch, issued shortly before 1 p.m. in 17 counties, is effective now through 8 p.m. Wednesday. The watch covers Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont until 8 PM EDTSimilar to Tuesday’s outbreak of storms, forecasters said some of the thunderstorms that develop Wednesday evening and tonight could pack a big punch because of the intense heat and high humidity stirring up the atmosphere. In addition, a cold front moving across the region could trigger some of the thunderstorms.
Although a severe thunderstorm watch is not as urgent as a warning, it puts the public on alert that strong storms with 60 mph winds capable of knocking down trees, snapping power lines or causing structural damage could be on the way.NASA says bright meteor may have zipped over NJ and NYC when loud booms were heard
