Brisbane-based contemporary artist Richard Bell parted with a key piece from one of his most celebrated series of paintings. TitledThe slogan references the stolen generations, when white officialdom forcefully removed Indigenous children from their families, Bell told Saleroom.“It was one of my favourite paintings,” he said. “I like the playfulness of it, but it’s also got a very sinister side.”Bell is one of Australia’s most internationally known artists.
Croft is the Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University, and thus one of Australia’s leading artist-academics. Body Paint, 1995, by internationally celebrated Anmatyerr artist, Emily Kam Kngwarreye, is estimated to fetch between $15,000 and $20,000. The auctioneer is waiving its 25 per cent buyer’s premium, which is usually added to the hammer price, according to head of Indigenous art Crispin Gutteridge.“I think a lot of our collectors will be interested in these works.”
