NDIS participants will have more control over the length of their plans within the next 12 months, according to the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill Shorten.

The current annual review process has been dubbed "traumatic"Having longer plans would mean many participants wouldn't have to have their plan reviewed every 12 months and is one part of the government's plan to reduce spending on the NDIS by $15.3 billion over the next four years.

Among the proposed changes is a crackdown on price gouging of participants, with Mr Shorten telling the ABC he was having conversations with the consumer watchdog about making it illegal. But there have been concerns voiced that by moving participants on to longer five-year plans, they may lose access to having their supports reviewed when their lives and families change."We want to make sure that the plans are as resourced as possible with as much knowledge as possible to be able to get that plan right initially with the participant and their families. Once you get that initial plan right, then hopefully things will be more smooth sailing.

Many NDIS participants are no strangers to being charged higher fees for services and equipment just because they're on the NDIS. "There should be a stronger regulatory framework just to say to companies and businesses, you can't do it, you just can't do it," he said.
