Some Nottinghamshire councillors have already resigned from the Labour Party
Nearly half of all Nottingham's Labour councillors have signed a letter to Keir Starmer criticising their party's "failure" to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. The letter calls on the Labour Party to "fulfil their duties under international law" by demanding an immediate ceasefire in the conflict, which first began when Hamas terrorists killed 1,400 innocent Israeli citizens.
This has included two members of Gedling Borough Council and one member of Nottingham City Council, all of whom now sit as independents. Now, just under half of Nottingham's remaining Labour councillors have signed a letter continuing to push the leadership to shift their position.The letter, reported by the Labour List website on November 1, is signed by several frontbenchers at Nottingham City Council, including the current Lord Mayor and Sherriff.
"The intensified human catastrophe in Gaza impacts us all, and the Labour Party's failure to call for an end to violence is causing hurt in our communities." Confirming he had signed the letter, Councillor Steve Battlemuch, who serves as the Portfolio Holder for Skills, Growth, Economic Development and Property, wrote: "I've signed this alongside other Labour .
