The coin's designer Valda Jackson says it will 'honour our parents and their legacy' and that it 'celebrates our presence, achievements, and contributions that continue to enrich our society'.
A new commemorative 50p coin will mark the 75th anniversary of passengers arriving in the UK on the Empire Windrush ship.generation standing against the Union Jack and pays tribute to the British Caribbean and Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1973.
Ms Jackson's parents were among the generation of people invited to leave their homes in the Caribbean to work in the UK. Her parents left St Thomas, Jamaica, in the 1960s and she later joined them aged five. Though the Empire Windrush was not the first ship to transport British Caribbean passengers to the UK after the Second World War, the people on board were mainly ex-service personnel who took up jobs that helped Britain's post-war labour shortage.Ms Jackson said the coin served to"honour our parents and their legacy, and which celebrates our presence, achievements, and contributions that continue to enrich our society".
