The proposal has almost reached the 10,000 signature threshold to trigger an official response

A new online petition is proposing that people with certain medical conditions should not be required to attend a health assessment for benefits such as Personal Independence Payment . It suggests that these should be based “solely on evidence from medical professionals, such as a letter from a GP or consultant”.

It continues: “We are concerned about how the disabled, with conditions such as inflammatory Arthritis. Heart disease, lung disease, respiratory diseases, poor mental health etc, are treated by the benefits system. Claimants with medical evidence of their condition should not be subject to degrading assessments. The petition is open until January 21, 2023 and can be viewed online here.

“It has always been our aim to make the right decision at the earliest opportunity so that claimants do not have to appeal.
