UK households could face a £300 fine and a criminal record for using their log burners this winter due to a change in law. The government has now reduced the permissible smoke emission from new stoves to 3g per hour, down from the previous 5g.

Households are urged to use only certified fire logs and to check their stove's glass for small cracks or excessive damage. Households with log burners or open fires are now legally mandated to purchase cleaner, alternative fuels like dry wood and manufactured solid fuels that emit less smoke. Dry wood not only generates more heat and less soot than wet wood but can also slash emissions by up to 50 per cent, reports the Express.- The sale of bagged traditional house coal and wet wood in small units under 2m3 is now illegal.- All manufactured solid fuels must have a low sulphur content and produce minimal smoke.
"The regulations state that owners are to face penalties for using wood-burning stoves which don't meet the UK's standard for emissions.
