An innovative, cost-effective mosquito net has prevented 13 million malaria cases and 25,000 deaths in countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

As the sub-Saharan countries continue to fiercely combat malaria, a new groundbreaking project has greatly boosted their efforts.

Africa is the worst sufferer of this mosquito-borne disease, accounting for over 90% of the deaths and cases worldwide. For context, Nigeria alone logs more than 25% of global deaths from malaria. It was in this context that the New Nets Project was designed. These new innovative nets are coated with a combination of insecticides, including a standard pyrethroid and a newer generation of pyrrole insecticides. It made the nets more effective against evolving mosquitoes. The success of the New Nets Project has been remarkable. In just three years, the distribution of 56 million nets across 17 malaria-plagued countries has made a significant impact in reducing malaria cases and deaths.

If converted into financial savings for health systems, this cost-efficiency can reach millions of dollars. The project’s official estimates say that the new nets can result in “a potential $28.9 million in financial savings to health systems.”While the initiative will significantly impact the global malaria prevention plans, experts hope for further research to develop new tools.
