Ten people have been killed and at least 35 others injured after a driver intentionally ploughed his vehicle into a large crowd in New Orleans , authorities have confirmed. The driver of the vehicle was killed in a firefight with police when the vehicle came to a stop, the FBI said. The attack took place in Bourbon Street in the city’s popular French Quarter, where people were celebrating New Year’s Eve at bars and restaurants. At around 3.15am local time (9.

New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) chief Anne Kirkpatrick said after driving into a crowd of people, the driver left the car and shot at officers. The officers are in a stable condition. Despite an earlier statement rejecting terrorism as the motive, the FBI later said the attack is being investigated as an “act of terrorism”. “The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism,” the statement said. The suspect, who was reportedly armed with an assault rifle, went around police barricades, and was “hell bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did”, Kirkpatrick said.
