The Lead Safe Child Care Pilot Program will award selected child care providers $12,000 grants, EPA-certified services, business support and lead screening.

Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition, Starting Point and Cleveland Clinic have launched the Lead Safe Child Care Pilot Program to award 30 Cleveland child care providers with grants to address lead at their sites. “Child care providers are often small business owners who care deeply about the children in their care and can’t afford disruptions to their business,” Nancy Mendez, president and CEO of Starting Point, said in a statement. No amount of lead exposure is considered safe, yet a Case Western Reserve University study found that one in four children in Cleveland is lead poisoned by the time they enter kindergarten, according to the Lead Safe Cleveland Coalition, which works to prevent lead poisoning.

“Cleveland Clinic is proud to support this very important and innovative effort to ensure that Cleveland child care centers are made lead safe,” Dr. Roopa Thakur, pediatrician and medical director of Cleveland Clinic Children’s School-Based Health Care program, said in a statement.
