A previous developer wanted to demolish and remodel the library, but the firm and Nottingham City Council failed to agree on the terms for a sale

New plans have been submitted to bring life back to the former Central Library after a previous scheme fell apart. The Angel Row library permanently closed in 2020, and was replaced by a new Central Library in Collin Street which opened at the end of last year.

The new developer has asked Nottingham City Council for planning permission to convert the five-storey structure into a 165-bedroom student accommodation block that will sit above a sports bar, a takeaway, and a shop. While the previous developer wanted to demolish the library and replace it with a larger structure, new applicant Harington Students said the building was of "sufficient quality" to convert.

Students would be housed in 53 one-bedroom studios and 29 shared flats inside the renovated library, and would access it using a new entrance on Mount Street. The ground floor and basement will have a manned reception, meeting rooms, a spa, games rooms, a karaoke room, table tennis and golf simulator, a dinner party room and a cinema.
