🚉 Is this the last stop for Lincolnshire's railway ticket offices?
Several railway ticket offices across Lincolnshire are on the brink of closure, as part of new plans that could revolutionise the way stations operate. The stations in question include those run by East Midlands Railway - Boston, Skegness, Sleaford, Spalding, Stamford, and Newark Castle - and those managed by London North Eastern Railway - Grantham, Newark Northgate, and Retford.
The Rail Delivery Group , an industry body, unveiled these plans as part of a series of consultations aimed at modernising station operations. However, the proposed closures have ignited concerns among unions and disability groups, who fear a potential loss of access to traditional ticket offices. In response to these concerns, operators have reassured that staff will not lose their jobs. Instead, they will transition from behind their desks to concourses and station platforms. The RDG argues that this shift will modernise customer service and better cater to today's passengers.
However, the RMT union has issued a warning, stating that an over-reliance on apps and remote mobile teams could have"catastrophic" consequences for elderly, disabled, and vulnerable passengers accessing the rail network. The RDG has countered this argument, highlighting that the way passengers buy tickets has dramatically changed over the past few decades. Today, just 12% of tickets are sold at offices, a stark contrast to the 82% sold in the mid-90s.
