A new statue, 'Standing in This Place,' depicting an enslaved black woman and a white textile worker, was unveiled in Nottingham's Green Heart. The work, created by sculptor Rachel Carter and the Legacy Makers community group, celebrates the interconnected lives of women in Nottingham's lace industry and the transatlantic slave trade.

A new statue was formally unveiled today, Thursday, February 6, at the Green Heart of Broad Marsh in Nottingham city centre. The creator, sculptor Rachel Carter, and the Legacy Makers, a community history group, dropped the ribbon in front of an eager crowd to celebrate the statue's new home in the city centre.

Rachel Carter spoke to Nottinghamshire Live at the unveiling of the statue. She said: "I'm ready to start celebrating after that three-year project. There were some ups and downs, especially as people argued that this shouldn't be represented and should be left to go to sleep, but we should be shouting about this.

At this point, one donor who was viewing the statue for the first time approached Rachel to express his praise, calling the statue "a beautiful piece of art. It is truly tremendous and stunning, and it really has to be lifesize to give its full impact".
