Stewart Burton, who was brought up in Newton Mearns before emigrating to Hong Kong with his family, where he was accepted into a fee-paying school. However, the autistic 17-year-old would go on to become homeless as he was introduced to heroin.
An East Renfrewshire man who become a teen member of a notorious Hong Kong gang has revealed how he escaped his life of crime to become a life coach for Scottish prisoners.
“I was 16 going on 17 when my parents came home. One night my dad went after my mother and I stood up to him to protect my mum. The next day he kicked me out. I ended up homeless on the streets of Hong Kong.” “The leader made me one of his lackeys. All I thought about was where I was going to get heroin. It started with a gram or two a day then it became chaotic as we did more robberies.”
Guards joked as he was bent over and probed. No one spoke English. He spent two weeks doing cold turkey in the hospital before joining the general inmates, then witnessed a murder. Stewart was later downgraded and sent to the Lai Sun category C prison, on Hei Ling Chau island, he was allowed to watch TV on Sunday afternoons and learned Cantonese thanks to its English subtitles.
