Multiple well-placed sources have come forward claiming plans are being ‘drawn up’ for an overnight closure of the hospital's A&E (from 8pm to 8am).
NHS bosses have been forced to dismiss widespread rumours that Ayr Hospital’s A&E is being primed to close overnight - before a complete closure.
Another source said: “I heard the first plan is to close it between 8pm and re-open it again at 8am. To some, that will ‘soften the blow’ for what is to come. Her comments came during the health board’s annual review, which saw the visit to Ayr Hospital of Maree Todd MSP, Minster for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing and Sport and Caroline Lamb, Chief Executive of NHSScotland. It’s the second time in a matter of months NHS chiefs have addressed the future of the Ayr Hospital’s A&E department. Just 10 months ago health chiefs rubbished talk that the A&E would close down.
As a result they made the decision to transfer ICU beds from University Hospital Ayr to Crosshouse. Bosses said the move was necessary to head off a future “emergency staffing crisis.”
