The 'XEC' variant accounts for around one in 10 Covid cases, health officials say
The NHS is sounding the alarm as Covid-19 hospitalisation numbers start to rise, highlighting concerns about the newly emerging XEC variant. Recent statistics have seen hospitalisation rates increase from 3.72 to 4.55 per 100,000, while the UK Health Security Agency points out a general climb in Covid infections across most indicators.
Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, a Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, noted that around one in 10 infections is now associated with the 'XEC' lineage but added some comforting words. "Current information doesn't suggest we should be more concerned about this variant but we are monitoring this closely. "If you are showing symptoms of flu or COVID-19 such as a high temperature, cough, and feeling tired and achy, try to limit your contact with others, especially those who are vulnerable.", reports Cambridgeshire Live.
Taking further precautions, it's also recommended to keep one's distance from those most vulnerable for 10 days post-positive result. Per NHS online advice: "You can go back to your normal activities when you feel better or do not have a high temperature. If your child has mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or mild cough, and they feel well enough, they can go to school or childcare.
