Health officials have urged people to 'stay home' if they come down with the virus
The NHS has issued a two-day warning as the norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, continues to spread throughout the UK. Health officials are advising people to "stay home" if they exhibit symptoms of the virus, which is currently at peak levels.
There has been an increase in cases recently, and, in early December, it was noted that many adult hospital beds across the UK were unavailable due to diarrhoea and vomiting outbreaks. Consequently, the NHS recommends avoiding healthcare settings if you have symptoms. A recent NHS social media post read: "Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about 2 days. If you catch it; stay home, rest and have plenty of fluids."Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, headaches, and limb aches typically appear one to two days after catching the virus.
The NHS also strongly advises against visiting hospitals and nursing homes and points out that alcohol gel hand sanitisers do not kill the virus. Instead, handwashing with soap and water is emphasised as more effective, according to a report by the Mirror, reports the Liverpool Echo. While norovirus can be a nuisance, most cases can be managed at home with adequate rest and hydration.
