The antibiotic-resistant infection hasn’t gone anyway, but it is a measure of how bad things have got since that its threat has been completely eclipsed in the list of medics’ biggest worries.

“It’s very expensive. They spend double the amount of their GDP than we do [on health]. And because of the system the motivations are wrong – medics are paid per activity, if you like, and the fact there isn’t that motivation in the NHS is a good thing.and that’s a big problem… I don’t know what the answer is. But we do have to pay our nurses better, pay our doctors better, and I find it hard to let go of the free at the point of use model.

“In the pandemic the private sector helped out the NHS in a massive way and kept a huge amount of work going. The private sector is great if everything is going well, but when things are going wrong, it uses the NHS as a backstop and that’s what makes me nervous about contracting a lot of NHS stuff out to private practice.

“We could see what was happening in Italy knowing that it was coming our way,” he said. “We were scared, like everyone else. Covid was unpredictable, relentless – and the scale was incredible. Our intensive care unit went from 35 beds to 120 at the peak. It was like nothing, I hope, we’ll ever see again.
