'I am helping people again, which is my calling, while also helping myself at the same time.'
Based in West Belfast and close to the city's peace gates, a new charity is offering a fresh approach to mental health, wellbeing, and recovery for people from all parts of the local community.
"When I did finally get my own flat last November, I was super depressed and missed the companionship I got from other people in the hostel I was staying in. "But that started to deteriorate quite rapidly especially during Covid when his cancer treatment was stopped due to the pandemic. The cancer then spread throughout his body and that put a lot of pressure on both of us in many ways.
He explained: "My dad had moved into a fold so I wasn't able to go with him. This would be my first time living on my own and being independent since the breakdown of my marriage in 2017 but I was homeless and that was a terrible experience.""I found Melted Headz on Facebook and saw that they were offering something different to the countless therapies I had tried along with intense counselling so I was intrigued," he said.
Thomas is the centre manager who has himself used drugs in the past and struggled with depression for years. He is the man on the end of the phone, 24 hours a day, dedicating endless hours to make sure people get the support that they deserve. "An addiction is all about finding a routine. People have routines as in there'll be a day of the week that it really starts like a Friday or a Saturday and it carries on.
