A Newtownabbey couple, Megan Larmour and Ryan, have bravely shared their journey to conceive, shedding light on the often-overlooked issue of male infertility. Megan, 27, and Ryan, 28, have been together since their teenage years, tying the knot in November 2023. Their dream of starting a family has been a long and arduous one, spanning nearly four years. Despite their unwavering hope, they have been dealt a heartbreaking blow, facing a mere 0.5% chance of natural conception.
Medical intervention is their only path forward, requiring them to undergo the Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment. ICSI, a more invasive form of IVF, involves directly injecting a sperm cell into an egg to facilitate fertilization and embryo creation. Megan candidly expressed the toll their IVF journey has taken on their lives. 'Our IVF journey has robbed us of enjoying the last few years of our 20s,' she shared. 'It's all we can think about. It has stopped us from being able to go abroad on multiple holidays and even our honeymoon as we can’t leave the country and need to save our money for treatment.' She further lamented, 'It's taken all the excitement, fun, and privacy of trying for a baby. It's taken over our life, it’s stopped us planning anything and living our life. It’s given us darkness and it’s going to take all our savings but it's been all we've concentrated on.'Ryan, deeply affected by the initial diagnosis, initially felt a sense of isolation and inadequacy. However, he quickly realized the prevalence of male infertility and the importance of open communication. He emphasized the need for men to be more open and supportive of their partners throughout this challenging process. 'When I was initially told the news about myself, I felt very alone and less of a man,' Ryan admitted. 'Then there was also the guilt over restricting your partner. But I soon realised that there lots of other men out there in a similar situation and that we need open up and talk about it more. It's not good for them or their partner, who has to take all the drugs and face the injections, to keep it bottled up. You've got to be more open and supportive because at the end of the day it doesn’t rally make you less of a man even though you feel that way initially.' The couple, facing financial constraints, have launched a GoFundMe appeal to raise £10,000 to cover the cost of private ICSI treatment. Their story has resonated deeply, already garnering over £2,000 in donations. They are appealing for support from anyone who can contribute, even a small amount, to help them realize their dream of becoming parents.
