USD graduate, who played in Yankees organization, among profiles of those who ‘play for the greater good’
Nick McCoy was a 10-year-old infielder preparing for All-Stars in the Rancho Penasquitos Little League when the team’s catcher got hurt in a home accident. At practice, McCoy’s coaches gathered the players and asked, “Who wants to catch?”
“Backup catchers survive in part because every team needs one,” Brown writes. “They are necessary, once or twice a week. They prosper because the game, like the world around the game, still needs good souls, honest efforts, open eyes and ears, closed mouths, compassion for the sad parts, a laugh for the silly parts, and a heart that knows the difference.”
McCoy, 37, is now a financial advisor with Stifel Financial Co. His Del Mar office still includes some reminders from his baseball career. On the wall is a spring training lineup card that includes his name along with the likes of Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki. “And you have this extension of the coaching staff responsibility as well that I think the other positions, like a backup left fielder, don’t have.”
“It’s like when you get to the end of the ‘Wizard of Oz’ and they pull the curtain back and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is reality,’ ” McCoy said. “I feel like a lot of us, myself included, you tell yourself this story of, ‘You are the starting catcher, you have these abilities, you just need the ABs, that break.’
After he retired as a player, McCoy entertained thoughts of reaching the big leagues as a team’s general manager or president of operations.“We got furloughed in 2020,” McCoy said. “I’m at home with a 6-month-old and a mortgage going, ‘What am I doing?’ I was traveling 150 nights out of the year.
