Writing for the Record, the former SNP leader says she remains as 'confident as ever' a majority of Scots will one day choose independence.

Ten years. It is hard to believe. So much has changed since those heady days of 2014 when Scotland came so close – but not close enough – to choosing an independent future.

I have so many happy memories of the campaign. I travelled the length and breadth of the country for months in the run up to polling day, speaking to tens of thousands of people in community centres and town halls. I even hosted a public meeting on board the ferry to Shetland – battling sea-sickness as I did so.

And then, of course, there was the result. For people like me, it was heartbreaking. Even though a decade has passed, the devastation of the morning after the night before still feels very raw. Where stands Scotland now, a decade on, and what does the future hold? These are the questions that should occupy us.The smart ones know that to be nonsense. The merest glance at opinion polls showing that upwards of 60 per cent of young Scots support independence tell us which way the tide is flowing.
