The burnout epidemic raging through corporate America has made it all the way to the top. The same team leaders driving stressed employees onward—perhaps promising a light at the end of the tunnel or, more likely, setting wildly high metrics to meet—are themselves starting to come apart at the seams.
By the time Schulz found an exit strategy—for both the job and that relationship—she was exhausted and irritable. She remembers her friends telling her, “This is not just a bad job; this is probably ruining you.” Now, when she sees job postings for restaurant and bar manager jobs, she scrolls right on by, despite the higher pay they often offer.
“Sometimes you don’t know how to function when it’s not chaotic,” she said. “It sets a terrible discipline in people. I kind of take a cynical view on this because people do treat it like a lifestyle.”, Christina Janzer, a senior vice president of research and analytics at Slack, pointed to two main factors workers blame for their fatigue and malaise: too much time wasted on low-value, mundane tasks and a persistent pressure to work after hours.
