Two San Antonio nonprofits are working to form community land trusts on the near West Side in an effort to preserve housing for lower- and middle-income families grappling with expensive home repairs, rising taxes and concerns about gentrification. Such ownership vehicles — which buy the land a house sits on and typically lease it to homeowners, who buy the house but not the land — are a new concept in San Antonio .
More than half of San Antonio-area renter households spend too much of their income on rent, report says The organization is starting with several casitas it acquired near its Rinconcito de Esperanza programming center at South Colorado and Guadalupe streets. Those have been deeded to the land trust and will be renovated. Another homeowner intends to give Esperanza their home after they die, Sánchez said.
