Warning bells ringing for North East Lincolnshire's finances 🚨
A peer review of North East Lincolnshire Council has warned that it is in a “financially fragile position”, and not all councillors are aware of this.
Council leader Cllr Philip Jackson welcomed the report at cabinet on Wednesday, June 14, and said “there’s nothing in there that we weren’t already sighted of, which is reassuring”.The review found the council’s finances are “extremely tight”, its budget “stretched and reducing”, and this is unlikely to change in the medium term.
There were also concerns raised about the council’s capacity “stretched to breaking point in some places”. It was the view within the council that it was stretched, “not aided by the feeling that everything is a priority”. “It was interesting, stimulating and engaging with them, without a doubt,” said Cllr Stan Shreeve, deputy leader and portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care.Cllrs and Shreeve and Jackson also welcomed the feedback on the council’s adult and social care. The council’s integrated adult and social care was praised as pioneering, low cost and provided impactful high-quality care.
The peer review advised councillors to be mindful of the requests made and their reasonableness. Most North East Lincolnshire councillors are not interested in training to improve their performance. On children’s services, the effects of Ofsted’s 2021 ‘inadequate’ report were described as “profound and wide reaching”.knows that there is much more to do," the report said.
