The Northern Lights and the Perseid meteor shower were spotted in the early house across Merseyside
The Northern Lights have lit up the night sky with rare sightings across Merseyside. Also known as Aurora borealis, the Northern Lights were spotted in Moreton, Meols, Formby and New Brighton in the early hours of Tuesday, August 13. Stargazers weren't only treated to Northern Lights, but also a Perseid meteor shower. This happens every year when Earth passes through trials of debris from comets or asteroids.
In the northern hemisphere, most of this activity takes place within a band known as the aurora oval, covering latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees. When activity is strong, this expands to cover a greater area – which explains why displays can be occasionally seen as far south as the UK. The US Government's space weather prediction centre showed the aurora overlapping with parts of northern Scotland last night and a red alert was issued on Lancaster University's AuroraWatch website.
