The union said that a mayday call last week was the “only genuine fault of concern” as the “engine completely seized”.

A series of Qantas flight turnbacks over the past week is “not too out of the ordinary” nor “a cause for concern”, the engineers union says, with the airline scrambling to reassure passengers of its safety credentials after a rareQantas domestic and international boss Andrew David told 2GB Radio that pilots were trained to err on the side of caution.

“They’ve had one real issue, and four precautionary returns,” he said. “This sequence is not too out of the ordinary. Aircraft return from time to time and, in fact, Qantas would average around 60 per year.” Boeing 737 planes are generally certified to run up to three hours on a single engine and the QF144 Auckland-Sydney flight was “never in any danger” despite the initial Mayday signal, Mr Purvinas said.

The Qantas executive said the Sunday Fiji-Sydney flight turnback was a result of faulty heating elements in the dials that measure the aircraft’s speed and altitude.
