Nottingham Forest players were involved as the Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was abandoned at half-time on Monday night after two people were shot dead in Brussels.
Forest’s Orel Mangala played the first 45 minutes of the game after being named in Belgium’s starting line-up, while Reds winger Anthony Elanga was named on the bench for Sweden. With the score at 1-1 at half-time, it is reported that both sets of players decided not to return for the second half of the match after hearing about the shooting.
However the game was not officially abandoned until over an hour later: “Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned,” a statement from UEFA read. “Further communication will be made in due course.”
