A concrete chess table, installed in a Nottingham car park to the dismay of local residents, has vanished without explanation.
A controversial chess table , oddly located in a car park , has vanished without warning, leaving people baffled. Last week, Nottinghamshire Live reported on the concrete table and seats attracting attention in Sherwood for all the wrong reasons after being installed in Winchester Street car park . The table's sudden disappearance has sparked confusion, with Colin Barratt, a local independent council candidate, stating that no one knows where it went.
However, three council workers were observed removing the table. Mr. Hardwick, a Sherwood resident, commented, “This ludicrous project was implemented with no consultation with Sherwood people and has been taken away in the same fashion.” Previously, outdoor chess tables have been situated in Nottingham parks. This particular table, however, first appeared just before Christmas in what many consider to be a rather desolate location. While funded by the government, the local authority was responsible for choosing the site. Residents and business owners expressed anger over the expenditure on placing the table in the car park, suggesting Woodthorpe Park as a more suitable alternative. Lisa Douglas, owner of The Winchester pub, stated, “We have a lovely park just up the road where this would have been perfectly placed and people could have enjoyed it in safe, pretty surroundings. The idea itself is great, but the execution is not. I believe that the local residents should have been consulted before someone made the decision to remove much-needed parking spaces from our main car park, in order to install a concrete bench, which is absolutely freezing in the winter. If nothing else, it has given us plenty of entertainment on the local Facebook group.” Adding to the controversy, the table was incorrectly angled. A white square should have been positioned bottom right on the board, but it was rotated 90 degrees. Nottinghamshire Live has reached out to Nottingham City Council for a response

This is the third application for a car park on the site, with previous plans for larger car parks in 2012 and 2022 falling through due to escalating construction costs. The new car park will include two disabled spaces, two electric vehicle charging spaces, and a layby for a catering van. The council hopes the car park will alleviate dangerous roadside parking, particularly during weekends and public holidays.
