Nottinghamshire County Council elections will proceed as scheduled in May 2025, despite proposed significant changes to the local government system. The UK government aims to abolish the two-tier system, potentially merging seven district and borough councils into two single authorities: Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council.

Nottinghamshire County Council has confirmed its elections will be going ahead in May 2025 as planned despite the biggest shake-up to local government for 50 years. The government has set out its ambition to remove the two-tier system of local government , which could mean seven councils across Nottinghamshire being scrapped.

Services run by the seven district and borough authorities could instead be run by either Nottinghamshire County Council or Nottingham City Council - which would be the only Nottinghamshire councils left. The plans are part of broader local government reorganisation and devolution plans being rolled out across England. A letter to council leaders across the country from local government minister Jim McMahon, seen by Nottinghamshire Live, says the government wants to see interim plans for local council reorganisation by March 2025. Given the changes on the horizon, some councils say they want to delay elections planned for May 2025. Will you be voting in the local elections in May? Let us know here The government has confirmed it could introduce legislation to delay the elections by a full year. Nottinghamshire County Council is the only authority affected by May 2025's elections and the authority has now confirmed they will be going ahead as planned. Jim McMahon's letter reads: 'I have heard from some areas that the timing of elections affects their planning for devolution, particularly alongside reorganisation. To help manage these demands, alongside our objectives on devolution, and subject to meeting the timetable outlined in this letter, I am minded-to lay secondary legislation to postpone local council elections from May 2025 to May 2026.' The government says the new council structures are eventually set to be implemented in April 2027 and 2028. Nottinghamshire County Council could end up delivering all services for the seven areas where a district and borough authority is set to be scrappe
