The honour is given to scientists and support staff who have worked in the region
A 2,000-metre mountain in Antarctica has been named after a Nottinghamshire man. Dr Ian Millar, who lives in Keyworth, was honoured for his geological research on the continent.
Each year, the Antarctic Place-names Committee recommends new names for geographical features, to honour scientists and support staff who have worked in the region. This year, it announced that a mountain on the southern Antarctic Peninsula will be named Mount Millar after Dr Millar. Dr Millar, 64, worked for the British Antarctic Survey for more than 21 years before joining the Keyworth-based British Geological Survey as an isotope geochemist at BGS in 2005. “I have been incredibly lucky to undertake some amazing fieldwork during my career, both in Antarctica with BAS and, more recently, in much warmer regions like North Africa and south-east Asia since joining BGS,” he said.
His work there contributed to determining the geological history of the peninsula through detailed geochronology.
