Nottinghamshire County Council is reminding residents to recycle responsibly during the festive season. Common holiday items like plastic food trays, foil wrappers, and tinsel often end up in recycling bins, but are actually not recyclable. The council encourages residents to check their recycling guidelines and use the Recycling Checker tool to ensure proper disposal.

With people having parties, hosting big Christmas dinners and treating each other to gifts over the festive season, there can be a significant amount of additional waste created by households across Nottinghamshire each year. While we all remember to check when the bin collection times have changed to, not everyone spends as much time thinking about what can and can't go in the recycling bin.

Many people also try to recycle their wrapping paper and cards, but if any of these have glitter or foil, then they cannot be recycled either. Food waste, batteries, CDs, DVDs and fairy lights also end up in the recycling bin, but these can't be recycled either. TV guides, tin cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard sweet tubes are all things that can be recycled. Plus, most gift sets or deliveries come in cardboard boxes and all of these can be recycled too, as can any plain Christmas cards and even squirty cream bottles.
