Nottinghamshire tourism officials embark on a mission to enhance the promotion of Robin Hood, launching a comprehensive survey to gauge public sentiment on how best to celebrate the legendary outlaw.
Nottinghamshire tourism officials are aiming to enhance the promotion of Robin Hood, seeking public input on how best to celebrate the legendary outlaw. The county council has initiated the first-ever survey dedicated to Robin Hood, a globally recognized figure.
Keith Girling, the county council's cabinet member for economic development, emphasized the unique asset that Nottinghamshire possesses, stating, 'We all know that we have something unique here in Nottinghamshire which we are very proud of. The Robin Hood legend and his historic home, Sherwood Forest, are known and loved across the world.'Girling further explained that with numerous depictions of Robin Hood on television and cinema screens over the years, the council wants to gather diverse perspectives on how the legend is perceived today. He highlighted the enthusiasm of tourism stakeholders to leverage this global brand, emphasizing the potential of Robin Hood to become an even more significant asset for Nottinghamshire, driving growth in the city and county's visitor economy, which currently exceeds £2 billion. The council intends to utilize the survey's findings, open until February 7, to formulate an 'action plan' outlining how the council and its partners can effectively utilize the Robin Hood brand.Previous reports in 2022 indicated concerns from political and business leaders that Nottinghamshire was forgoing substantial tourism revenue by not sufficiently celebrating Robin Hood. Ben Bradley, the former county council leader, even proposed the development of a Robin Hood theme park within Sherwood Forest. The heroic outlaw is widely associated with the county rather than the city. Legends place Robin Hood's residence in Sherwood Forest, with the Major Oak, believed to have served as a hideout for the Merry Men, still standing today. Edwinstowe, situated within the heart of Sherwood Forest, is home to the church where Robin Hood and Maid Marian are said to have been married. From a city perspective, a key element of the Robin Hood narrative involves his rivalry with the Sheriff of Nottingham, who is believed to have imprisoned Robin in the caves beneath Nottingham Castle. Participants in the county council's new survey have the opportunity to enter a prize draw for a one-night deluxe pod stay for three at Holme Pierrepont Country Park campsite. The survey, which includes a dedicated space for businesses to provide feedback, asks respondents about their favorite TV and film portrayal of Robin Hood
