Report from Ian Doyle at St James' Park after Liverpool's clash with Newcastle United
The scream from Darwin Nunez as he slid in delight towards the travelling Kop could be heard all the way back on Merseyside after the frustrations of recent weeks came pouring out in the most dramatic, unforgettable, remarkable fashion.
Hardly the impact the striker would have wanted at the start of what is likely to be a pivotal season of his time with the Reds. He needed only four minutes to draw the Reds level, capitalising on Sven Botman making a hash of a ball forward from fellow substitute Diogo Jota and thundering an angled right-footed drive into the far corner beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Nunez, though, saved his best for three minutes into additional time. Played into a similar position by Mohamed Salah’s fine pass, the end result was the same. Cue delirium as the Liverpool bench rose to their feet as players and coaching staff embraced as, yards away, Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall – who had put his finger to his lips in the direction of Jurgen Klopp during one first-half flashpoint – remained strangely silent.
