A nurse who was allegedly stabbed with scissors at a hospital in Oldham, England, remains hospitalized in critical condition. The suspected attacker, Rumon Haque, appeared in court on Tuesday facing charges of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
Shocking images have emerged of the nurse allegedly stabbed with scissors at a hospital. Achamma Cherian, a 57-year-old nurse, was attacked on a ward at the Royal Oldham Hospital's acute medical unit on Saturday afternoon, leaving her fighting for her life. Greater Manchester Police revealed that Cherian remains hospitalized receiving treatment for her injuries.
Rumon Haque, 37, from Royton, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article in connection with the attack. He appeared before Manchester magistrates court on Tuesday, where no pleas were entered and a bail application was not made. Haque was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear again at Minshull Street Crown Court in February. During the court appearance, Haque, wearing a grey sweatshirt and escorted by two prison officers, identified himself as “Mohammed Roman Haque”. District Judge Jane Hamilton stated that the attempted murder charge necessitates a crown court hearing, and the possession of a bladed article charge will be tried concurrently. Detective Superintendent Matt Walker of Greater Manchester Police's Oldham district expressed concern for Cherian as she continues her recovery and emphasized the ongoing support for her, her family, and her colleagues. Walker also highlighted the close collaboration with NHS colleagues to assist anyone affected by the incident. Neighbours of Ms Cherian shared their shock and concern, describing her as a friendly and dedicated nurse who worked long shifts. One neighbour, who requested anonymity, stated, 'I know she works as a nurse at the hospital. I’ve seen her leaving for work around 8 am in the morning. She’s lived here since we moved here in 2007. I don’t know much else about her or her husband, but I think they’ve got two children. It’s shocking what’s happened.' Another neighbour added, 'I’ve seen her walking home from her shift at the hospital around 8 am in the morning. But I didn’t know she was the nurse who’d been stabbed. It’s terrible. They’re a lovely family and have lived here a long time.
