'We know that news of this nature will come as a shock'

An investigation into the stabbing of a nurse at a Greater Manchester hospital is in its 'early stages' police say. It comes as they seek to reassure residents following the 'shocking' attack which is being treated as attempted murder.

The Manchester Evening news understands it happened in a bay inside the A+E department of the hospital and that the victim, a nurse, was attacked with a 'sharp instrument', that wasn't a knife. Her friends and colleagues are currently receiving support. "It’s believed that a member of the public attacked a member of staff at Royal Oldham Hospital. The victim, a woman in her 50s, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital for treatment. Her injuries are believed to be life changing.

The statement included a comment from Detective Sergeant Craig Roters from GMP's Oldham district: He said: “This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.
