Manchester United hope to submit plans for a 100,000-seater stadium this year, a proposal that will take mammoth finances to pull off.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given the recently-established Old Trafford taskforce until December to cost up options and deliver its proposals on what happens next with the iconic stadium.

“A new stadium allows for it to be bespoke to be able to market itself as the go-to venue for other events. Spurs’ stadium, for example, has locker rooms on both sides of the ground, one for the football and the other for the NFL, with whom the club has a deal to host live regular season games. “From a revenue generation perspective, it makes the most sense, and matchday revenues would surge past the £150m early on. That would be a major boon for a club that knows it has the demand to be able to fill stadia week in, week out, several times over.
