Older people making new claim for Pension Credit could also receive £301 payment

The Department for Work and Pensions recently announced the 2023/24 timetable for new cost of living payments aimed at helping millions of households across the country mitigate soaring inflation and high energy bills. The first part of the £900 means-tested payment is worth £301 and will start to land automatically in over eight million bank accounts from April 25 until May 17, 2023.

The latest figures from the DWP show that there are now some 12.6 million people across Great Britain claiming their State Pension. But an estimated 1.8 million have an income of less than £100 per week - and should check if they are eligible for Pension Credit. Top Money Stories Today What is Pension Credit? Pension Credit currently gives 1.4 million people across the UK extra money to help with living costs if they are over State Pension age and on a low income.

Mixed aged older couples and Pension Credit In May 2019, the law changed so that a ‘mixed age couple’ - a couple where one partner is of State Pension age and the other is under it - are considered to be a ‘working age’ couple when checking entitlement to means-tested benefits.
