We spoke to the journalist and author Omar El Akkad about his new book in which he berates Western countries following the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
He says the moral values of the West are a lie, and young people are increasingly feeling dislocated from what their countries are doing.Early on during the slaughter in Gaza , I was thinking about what my relationship is with the West because I grew up learning this language and very much attuned to the culture of the West – and suddenly I felt very unmoored from that.
For the vast majority of people who live in this part of the world, if you don’t pay any attention to this, how does that change your daily life? It effectively doesn’t. The opposite is true. If you stand up and talk about this, you risk your livelihood, you risk your career, you risk being thought of as the troublesome one, who doesn’t get invited to dinner parties anymore because you make things awkward.
