On the near-perfect 'Bright Future,' Adrianne Lenker takes stock of the bonds she’s made and weaves them into her most sterling work to date.

On her enchanting, near-perfect fifth solo album, the singer, songwriter and Big Thief bandleader takes stock of the bonds she’s made and weaves them into her most sterling work to date. There’s a moment in “Real House” where Adrianne Lenker recalls a wish she made as a kid. While building a portal with scraps of metal in the backyard and her own imagination, she hopes, deeply, that magic could be real.

It can be tempting to view solo albums by members of bands as esteemed as Big Thief as something separate—something outside the canon—but Adrianne Lenker has especially stood assuredly on her own many times before, on records like. The music she shares under her own name is often quieter, but it consistently lands with equal power, if not more., though, is not only her most impressive solo album to date, but it’s also a genuine competitor for the best album she’s ever been involved with.

“Sadness As A Gift” a hopeful breakup song, one that wishes for that severed connection to be repaired later on, after everyone has had time to heal. Its message is a noble one, though easier said than done. Lenker is slightly more circumspect on “Donut Seam,” a folk song that pairs the decaying end of the world to vibrant asides.

Fans were no doubt shocked to see “Vampire Empire” within the tracklist upon its announcement, but don’t expect it to be anything familiar to the Big Thief version released last summer. Here, the fan-favorite track appears in something closer to its original formulation—with the beloved lyric “I’m the fish and she’s my gills” intact. Rather than the free-spirited jam session of the Big Thief version, Lenker’s take is more rigid, done up with piano and violin .

The album’s grand finale, “Ruined,” was the first single from the album, released into last year’s December cold. It’s a song that would be easy to call “devastating,” if it were not so clearly gesturing at the devastation Lenker herself feels. She sings about a relationship she’s fallen so deep into that it consumed her—and now that it has ended, she’s savoring every memory of it she can. Lenker is clinging to trinkets given to her, like an amethyst gifted as a keepsake.
