People over State Pension age have just one month to claim a government benefit, in order to receive the Winter Fuel Payment. Pensioners need to apply for Pension Credit before 21 December, to qualify for the help towards heating billsIt's also the gateway to a number of other benefits. These include Council Tax discount, Housing Benefit if you rent your home and the Winter Fuel Payment, which is worth between £200 and £300.

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help with the extra costs of heating your home in winter. Until this year, it was paid to everyone over State Pension age. However, this summer, the government announced the payment would now be means tested. That means only people on certain benefits, including Pension Credit, are now eligible.
