Onshore wind rebellion will make general election defeat worse, says Rees-Mogg as splits deepen 🔴 Rishi Sunak is caught between rebellion and counter-rebellion on the Tory backbenches

Mr Rees-Mogg, who has campaigned against onshore wind, on Tuesday urged the pro-wind rebels to back down or risk losing more Tory MPs their seats at the next election, expected in 2024.

He added: “People need to remember from 1997 that people thought by showing how independent-minded they were they would help themselves in their own constituencies. If anything, they did slightly worse rather than slightly better. It came as Business Secretary Grant Shapps argued against onshore wind in the Commons, claiming turbines are now “so big” they have to be put offshore.

He went on: “it’s actually convenient the World Cup is on… these single turbines are seven football pitches in scope as they turn. They’re not buildable onshore. It’s one of the reasons why the cheapest way to build them offshore, to produce energy offshore, is to build these mammoth turbines which go together in groups of two or even up to 300.”
