A recent study reveals that a majority of Oracle Java users are considering switching to open-source alternatives due to Oracle's expensive licensing changes. The report highlights the growing dissatisfaction with Oracle's pricing model and the increasing demand for cost-effective and predictable Java solutions.

A recent study by Dimensional Research, sponsored by open Java support and platform provider Azul, reveals that a significant portion of Oracle Java customers are considering switching to alternative Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) or Java Development Kits (JDKs) due to Oracle's recent licensing changes. The percentage of Oracle Java users contemplating a migration to open-source alternatives surged from 72% in 2023 to a staggering 88% in 2024.

This dissatisfaction is particularly pronounced in France and Germany, where 92% and 95% of users, respectively, expressed a desire to leave Oracle's ecosystem. The study attributes this shift to Oracle's pricing model, which has been criticized for being costly and inflexible. Organizations are increasingly concerned about the affordability of maintaining their Java licenses and support under Oracle's terms. The report highlights a pressing need for cost-effective and predictable alternatives that align with tight IT budgets. Several open-source alternatives to Oracle Java exist for production environments, including Bellsoft Liberica, IBM Semeru, and Azul Platform Core. These options offer organizations greater control over their Java deployments, reduced licensing costs, and the freedom to customize their environment to their specific needs. Scott Sellers, co-founder and CEO at Azul, commented on the findings, emphasizing the growing trend of organizations seeking to optimize their Java deployments for operational efficiency and cost predictability. He noted the continued importance of Java as a foundation for business-critical applications and highlighted the emergence of cloud optimization strategies, improved DevOps productivity, and innovations in artificial intelligence as key areas of focus within the Java ecosystem
