Many people had travelled from across the country to witness the famous illumination switch-on event

One of the biggest events in the seaside resort's calendar, Blackpool Illuminations went off with a bang last Friday.

Over the years, many famous faces have come to the town for the all important switch-on, including Jonathan Ross, Peter Kay and Barbara Windsor. This year, residents and visitors alike were graced by the presence of noughties disco-star Sophie Ellis-Bextor who turned on the lights after performing a melody of her hits including Murder on the Dancefloor.

The pair decided to stop and sit down a few hours before the illumination event was set to kick off, in order to secure the best seats available, as opposed to standing in the crowd and watching the celebrations unfold that way. She added: "I've brought my grandson this time and it's ended the summer holidays nicely." Ellis was most excited for the fireworks and the atmosphere for the whole event to be hosted outside for the first time in a number of years.

When asked what her favourite part of the event is, she said: "It's just seeing all the lights and the atmosphere and everyone out and about. It's just nice and there's a nice atmosphere." "We're excited for everything," Rachel said. "My boy likes the fireworks. We've seen the lights before but not the switch-on."
