Last night’s 6-2 victory over the Marlins — historic in its own right — was the Padres’ 15th victory in their past 17 games.And it’s not all because of Jackson Merrill, though he has become the face of this hot stretch.
And so they did not, instead winning a third consecutive game in which they trailed in the ninth inning. It was the first time in franchise history that had been done.Mostly, though, their praise spoke to something bigger that has led to Merrill being the guy who last night joined Hall of Famer Mel Ott as the only player 21 years or younger to have four game-tying or go-ahead home runs in the ninth inning or later in a single season.
They would go on to put five more balls in play with an exit velocity of 99-plus, with their total of 15 tied for their most in a game this season. Arraez hurt the thumb sliding into third base on a triple on June 25 and has started all but five games since. He has been told by doctors he can continue to play without further damage and that while a rest of a couple weeks will make him feel better it would not solve the issue.
“I’m trying,” he said. “I mean, I’ll snake them all day long. They don’t pay as well in as holds. But winning the World Series does. So, you know, it’s a wash.”Every pitcher who appeared in last night’s game for the Padres was acquired by president of baseball operations A.J. Preller at the trade deadline.
