Fernando Tatis Jr. takes batting practice on field for the first time, expects to play right field when he returns to lineup next month

The Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. smiles after taking batting practice Friday at Petco Park. Fernando Tatis Jr. took batting practice, hitting balls into the seats beyond left field and joking with teammates between turns in the cage while dozens of kids shrieked sporadically his name.

“I really don’t have specific dates,” he said. “I feel like that’s more of a conversation between the training staff, the manager and myself and A.J. . But, I mean, I’m definitely playing baseball next month. That’s what it looks like.” “This is a great team, and not a single player can carry any team,” Tatis said. “This a really good team. I’m happy for what we have accomplished together. And the boys picking up every single guy. It’s not one guy, it’s everybody. The entire lineup, the entire rotation, the bullpen is lights-out. You know, the boys have been outstanding. So I’m really happy with my team. This is a great group of guys that we have over here.

The team has long held internally he was on track to return in September, but only this week has there been a public acknolwedgment that a return was nearing. The main reason for that was there was not much to share as he essentially did nothing but rest for a month. A series of MRIs over his time sidelined showed sufficient healing by late July for him to start doing limited activity such as light jogging and playing catch.
